Description
The Drake Environmental Action League (DEAL) club on campus was interested in finding ways to improve the water quality of stormwater runoff coming from Drake University’s campus. Drake faculty and staff, the City of Des Moines, and IDALS Urban Conservationists assisted students in identifying best management practices for the highly visible site adjacent to Cline Hall that contributes to water quality issues. It was determined that three bioretention cells will be implemented to infiltrate and filter stormwater runoff before entering Ravine Creek.

The university intends to use this project to provide academic and research opportunities to Drake students and faculty, as well as to host educational events to the broader community about the importance of water quality. Drake faculty, staff, and students will be involved in the design and construction of the project, including plant selection, technical advisement, research, installation, and the design of interpretive signage.
