Prairie Pointe Park Stormwater Management Retrofit

2021

About

Grant award
$125,000

Total project
$252,500

Description
The City of Elkhart is taking advantage of an opportunity to treat a majority of the stormwater runoff from the entire city. The lagoons at the abandoned wastewater treatment facility will be converted into stormwater wetlands, the centerpiece of an expanded Prairie Pointe Park. New storm sewer will divert most of the City’s stormwater runoff to the wetlands. A multi-stage outlet will be constructed to slowly release water into a series of riffles and pools. A forebay will capture sediment from incoming runoff. Native plants will be restored around the perimeter of the ponds. These features will enhance the water quality of the South Skunk River downstream.
